WATER POLO
The North Allegheny girls’ water polo team is coming off of a 12-win season and a sixth-place finish in the state of Pennsylvania.
The Lady Tigers lost Becca Melanson to graduation. Melanson was an All-American, an All-State selection and the 2022 PA Girls Water Polo Player of the Year. She will be playing with UCLA Water Polo in the fall of 2023.
North Allegheny returns second team all-state goalie Izzie Trunzo. Trunzo will be counted on as a senior leader this season. Mikaela Dassanaike was the PA Girls Water Polo Rookie of the Year and made the PA All-Freshman team a year ago. Isabella Spino was also on the PA All-Freshman team in 2022. Tori Tieppo is another player to watch with a lot of toughness and strong swimming ability.
This will be a younger team this year than in 2022, but they do have some returning starters. Carissa Jones and Katyusha Peregoncev are returning starters along with Trunzo.
The North Allegheny boys’ water polo team finished in third place in the state in 2022. The third place finish was the best finish for the Tigers since 2018.
Nine players graduated from the team a year ago. It was a very experienced squad in 2022 as six of the seven starters were multi-year lettermen. While the Tigers lost a lot from last season, they still believe that depth is a strength for this team, as the JV team had a strong 2022 season. Camden Wright is the only returning starter for North Allegheny.
Anthony Hollo, Jonathan Mowry, Colton McCartney, Sreeker Kakumani are all seniors that could play a big part in 2023. Micahel Stefanko is ready to step into the net for North Allegheny at the varsity level. Mason Shantz, Matthew Woods and Stefanko were All-Freshman players a year ago and will be relied on a lot more in 2023.
