2012 saw the Patriots finish the season at 41-19, clinching their second consecutive postseason berth. Fresh off their run to the Super Regionals in 2011, DBU kept the momentum rolling, knocking off the likes of #17 Oklahoma twice during the regular-season, while also boasting wins over TCU and Oklahoma State. A series win at Creighton in mid-May also bolstered the Patriots’ postseason hopes, as DBU eventually earned #2 seed in the Waco Regional.
In their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals, DBU rolled over UT Arlington, 10-0, as Taylor Massey pitched a complete-game shutout. The Patriots also defeated Oral Roberts, 11-8, to advance to the finals where they dropped back-to-back games to #5 Baylor to see their season come to a close in Waco.
At season’s end, shortstop Joel Hutter and outfielder Boomer Collins were each named All-Americans. Collins boasted a .374 batting average and led the team in home runs (13), while Hutter hit .338 and drove in a team-high 72 runs.
The Patriots’ roster was riddled with professional talent once again, as six players from DBU were called on draft day. It was the third time in program history that at least six players had been selected.
Taylor Massey threw as complete game Joel Hutter’s 72 RBI were the sixth shutout versus UT Arlington in the first most in the nation in 2012.
