68 NORTH ALLEGHENY FALL SPORTS PREVIEW
   PREVIEW
FIELD HOCKEY
The North Allegheny field hockey team won 13 games in 2022 and reached the WPIAL championship game for a second consec- utive season. The 13-win campaign was impressive considering it was an injury-riddled season with adversity creeping at every
turn. After fighting through the twists and turns of 2022, the Tigers that return for this season know what it takes to persevere.
The Lady Tigers lost nine players to graduation from the 2022 finalist team, several of which have gone on to play collegiately. Despite those losses, the Tigers return their leading scorer from a year ago, Isla Abrams, an All-WPIAL performer who netted a team-best 25 goals. Ju- niors Mia Brinkley and Josie Shomburg have both been impact players since their freshman season but will be asked to do a little bit more this year as upperclassmen. Senior Tanvi Chala will also be an impact play- er for the Tigers. North Allegheny graduates goalie Jordan Ashbaugh but Kayla Joyce has been waiting in the wings and looks ready to fill the void. Joyce was recently named to the Maxpreps Top 150 players in the country.
On top of the success at the varsity level, head coach Michelle Couch is looking to grow the game of field hockey at the youth level by start- ing the North Allegheny Youth Field Hockey program from scratch. This fall will be the youth program’s second year in existence.
