2023 WPIAL Finalists, 2023 PIAA Quarterfinalists
The 2023 North Allegheny baseball team won its third consecutive section title and reached the WPIAL championship for the second time in the last three seasons. The Tigers also got back into the PIAA playoffs and claimed their first win in the state tournament since the 2021 PIAA semifinals.
The non-section tune-up games before section play went very well for the Tigers as they went 3-1 in those games with the lone loss com- ing to State College.
Section play started well for the Tigers as they took two out of three from Butler and then swept Allderdice. North Allegheny took two out of three from Seneca Valley before getting tripped up by Pine-Richland, dropping two of three to the Rams.
North Allegheny was the No. 2 seed in the WPIAL playoffs and drew Norwin in the quarterfinals. The Tigers would make quick work of Norwin and Butler to qualify for the WPIAL Championship game where they ultimately fell to Mt. Lebanon.
The Tigers rebounded to beat McDowell in the first round of the state playoffs before bowing out to Cedar Cliff in the quarterfinals.
Among the season’s many highlights, sophomore Nico Varlotta twirled a no-hitter in a 5-0 win against Allderdice on April 20.
Additionally, junior southpaw J.D. Costanzo concluded the season with 91 strikeouts, the third most in a single-season in program history.
