 GIRL’S
VOLLEYBALL
After losing two games during its first trip through Bay Valley Athletic League play, the Heritage varsity girls volleyball team knew it faced an uphill battle in order to capture its fourth straight league title.
Unlike the previous three seasons, in which the Patriots went undefeat- ed during the league season, this league title included multiple battles and uncertainty along the way. A three-set victory over Freedom at home turned the tide, and set the tone for the second half of league play. A straight sets victory over Liberty in a tournament increased expectations and momentum, and Heritage was dominant from there, taking down Deer Valley and Freedom each in four sets before sweep- ing Liberty at home to clinch the league title.
Second-half wins over Liberty and Pittsburg erased the sting of earlier losses, and propelled the Patriots into post-season play, where they fell to a tough Monte Vista team in the first round of the North Coast Section Division 1 playoffs. The season gained an additional highlight when head coach Janet Hannigan won her 500th game as a head coach at Heritage, combined between the girls’ and boys’ programs.
The Patriots’ lower levels also performed strong all season, as the junior varsity went 22-6 overall and 10-0 in league play, not dropping a set against BVAL opponents, while the frosh team went 8-2 in league play.
