FLAG FOOTBALL
A season which started with a huge 25-6 win over rival Liberty ended on an even bigger stage for the inaugural Heritage girls flag football team.
The Patriots were selected for the
North Coast Section Invitational, an eight- team playoff following
the first-ever regular season. Though Heritage fell to Clayton Valley in its semifinal game, the Patriots showed that they had been up to the challenge all season long.
In addition to the thrilling win over the rival Lions in the first-ever night of girls flag football in the Bay Valley Athletic League, a three-game slate at Heritage which featured all six schools in rivalry games,
Heritage also swept Deer Valley and split games against tough Antioch and Freedom teams. On one big night during the second half of the season, the Patriots cemented their status as a playoff team by defeating the Panthers and the Falcons in back-to-back games.
One trademark of this year’s Heritage team was its multi-sport athletes who found a new home during the fall season. That included starting quarterback Amaya Gilmore, who came from the softball diamond, and standouts from the hardwood such as twin sisters Aubrey and Aleiyah Sutton-Villamor, plus senior Grace Hernandez. State qualifiers in track such as Kayla Marino and Camille Williams also made their mark during the flag football season.
Following this year’s inaugural season, the sport figures to only grow, especially as all schools in the Bay Valley Athletic League and all surrounding leagues have announced expansion of their programs to include junior varsity programs for the fall 2024 season, when the North Coast Section is also expected to debut its first official post-season bracket.
