GIRL’S
BASKETBALL
When it came down to it, no one was stopping the Heritage girls basketball team from winning their ninth straight Bay Valley Athletic League title.
The Patriots entered the final game of the regular season in a tie for first place with crosstown rival Liberty, meaning that Heritage hosted a winner-take-all finale. The visiting Lions started fast, building a quick lead with some hot three-point shooting, but the Patriots stormed back to take a two-point lead after one quarter and pulled away in the second half for the 57-46 victory and another league championship. As she did all season, freshman Ze’Ni Patterson led the way against Liberty, with 24 points and six rebounds. The league MVP averaged over 16 points, nearly seven rebounds and over three steals per game.
While Patterson may have been the only player to average in dou-
ble figures, there were plenty of strong contributors all season long. Senior Abby Livermore was a threat in the post for Heritage, averaging eight points and over six rebounds per game, while fellow senior Kend- all McClure averaged nearly nine points and over four assists per game.
The early part of the season featured an appearance in the title game of the Peyo Classic, beating eventual NCS Division 2 finalist Northgate
in the process, and three straight wins to conclude the Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego. The latter part of the season was even better, as Heritage reached 20 wins for the season with a non-league victory over Sac-Joaquin Division 2 finalist Vanden, an NCS quarterfinal win over James Logan and a CIF NorCal victory on the road at Grant-Sac- ramento.
