BOY’S
BASKETBALL
A young roster and a challenging schedule led to some bumps in the road for the Heritage boys basketball team, but also yielded a strong finish
and some glimpses of the future during competitive tournament play.
The Patriots won two of three games at both the Stonebarger Tournament and the Don Nelson
Classic in December, including wins over eventual NCS Division 1 playoff teams College Park and Foothill. After a tough stretch in late December and the first half of January, Heritage proved its toughness as the BVAL schedule got into full swing. The Patriots won three of their last five games and four of their final seven games to finish tied for third in the BVAL standings.
Sophomore Brady Lockrem and junior Nate Grube both averaged double figures in scoring for Heritage, including 13 points per game
from Lockrem. Lockrem topped the 20-point mark on five occasions for the Patriots, including a season-high 22 points in a late-season win over Deer Valley. Grube, meanwhile, reached double figures on 12 different occasions, including a 28-point explosion in a Bambauer Classic victory over Mills-Millbrae. Those two were far from the only contributors, however, and the season finale against Freedom was a great example, as senior Mason Weber and sophomore Alvin Ella went for 14 and 13 points, respectively, in a 68-44 victory. Junior Austin Beltram was another season-long threat, scoring in double figures
on eight occasions, including a season-high 21 points in the win over College Park.
