2024 SEASON IN REVIEW
JOHNSON & PETTITTE NAMED ALL-AMERICANS IN 2024
At the conclusion of the 2024 season, Ryan Johnson and Luke Pettitte each garnered All-American honors. Johnson was named an All-American by all five major college baseball publications, cementing his place in DBU history as just the third consensus All-American, joining Jason Krizan (2011) and Devlin Granberg (2018). In 16 starts, Johnson posted an 11-3 record, and his 2.21 ERA was the fifth-lowest in a single season in DBU’s Division I era dating back to 2004. His dominance on the mound also placed him in the top 10 nationally in six statistical categories. Meanwhile, Luke Pettitte was named a Second Team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game. In his 11 appearances, including eight starts, Pettitte went 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA, while striking out 43 batters and walking only nine in 36.2 innings of work.
DBU LANDS LEAGUE-HIGH ELEVEN ON ALL-CUSA TEAM
For the second straight year, DBU led Conference USA with 11 players selected to the All-CUSA team. Leading the way with individual accolades were Ryan Johnson, who was named CUSA Pitcher of the Year, Michael Dattalo, who earned CUSA Newcomer of the Year honors, and Luke Pettitte, who was recognized as CUSA Freshman of the Year. Head coach Dan Heefner was also honored with CUSA’s prestigious Keith LeClair Coach of the Year award, while assistant coach Cliff Pennington was named Assistant Coach of the Year. The Patriots were well represented across the teams, with six players named to the First Team: Johnson, Jaron DeBerry, Chayton Krauss, Conner Mackay, Ethan Mann, and Miguel Santos. Dattalo, Luke Heefner, and Grant Jay each earned Second Team selections, while Pettitte was further recognized with a spot on CUSA’s All- Freshman Team.
JOHNSON & DEBERRY DRAFTED IN FIRST THREE ROUNDS
Ryan Johnson and Jaron DeBerry, who headlined the Patriots’ weekend pitching rotation in 2024, were each selected in the Major League Baseball Draft at season’s end. Johnson became the sixth-highest draft pick in school history when the Los Angeles Angels selected him with the 74th overall pick in the second round. Just 19 picks later, the Milwaukee Brewers called on DeBerry, choosing him in the third round.
In addition to Johnson and DeBerry, senior second baseman Miguel Santos also earned his opportunity to play professionally, signing with the Chicago White Sox as a non-drafted free agent following the MLB Draft. Over his three-year career at DBU, Santos established himself as one of the program’s premier players, earning three All-Conference selections and being named to the ABCA Central All-Region team after his senior season.
