GLOBAL SPORTS MISSION INITIATIVE
THE DBU BASEBALL TEAM SPENT FALL BREAK 2019 SERVING IN CUBA. The team’s trip was their fourth trip abroad as part of DBU’s Global Sports Mission Initiative program dating back to their first trip to Guatemala in 2007. The Patriots have also visited the Dominican Republic in 2011 and Curacao in 2015.
Fifty members of the DBU community traveled to Cuba
as coaches, players, and support staff helped to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ through the sport of baseball. During their five-day trip, the DBU Baseball team showcased their talents in the capital city of Havana in two games versus the university team associated with the Cuban National League. The Patriots also traveled to the town of Matanzas to face the city’s provincial team and hosted a clinic for the youth in the community.
“I know our players would agree with me when I say that the mission trips have been a highlight of their time at DBU,” DBU Head Coach Dan Heefner said. “Each trip has brought us closer together as a team, but more importantly they have reinforced what we talk about in regards to
faith and humility. We get to see how big God is, that he is
not just the God of the United States, but that he is being worshipped all over the world. When we go and serve, we see that it truly is better to give than to receive.”
In addition to participating in the Global Sports Mission Initiative, DBU Baseball players take an active role in supporting the University’s mission of developing servant leaders through serving locally as well. The players and coaches have served the Dallas/Fort Worth community by conducting several free baseball clinics, volunteering at the Special Olympics of Texas State Track and Field Meet, Feast of Sharing, Operation Christmas Child, Habitat for Humanity, and the North Texas Food Bank.
