GLOBAL SPORTS MISSION INITIATIVE
THE DBU BASEBALL TEAM TRAVELED TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC DURING THE FALL BREAK OF 2023. The team’s trip was their fifth as part of DBU’s Global Sports Mission Initiative program, dating back to their first trip to Guatemala in 2007. The Patriots have also visited the Dominican in 2011, Curacao in 2015, and Cuba in 2019.
Players, coaches, and staff traveled to the Dominican Republic in October of 2023 with the mission to spread the gospel message of Jesus Christ through the sport of baseball. During their five-day trip, the Patriots competed against teams consisting of professional players in the capital city of Santo Domingo, as well as the New York Yankees’ Complex in Boga Chica. While in Jarabacoa, the Patriots hosted a baseball clinic for local children. The team also served in various communities, painting homes in impoverished areas.
“I know our players would agree with me when I say that the mission trips have been a highlight of their time at DBU,” DBU Head Coach Dan Heefner said. “Each trip has brought us closer together as a team, but more importantly they have reinforced what we talk about in regards to
faith and humility. We get to see how big God is, that he is not just the God of the United States, but that he is being worshipped all over the world. When we go and serve, we see that it truly is better to give than to receive.”
In addition to participating in the Global Sports Mission Initiative, DBU Baseball players take an active role in supporting the University’s mission of developing servant leaders through serving locally as well. The players and coaches have served the Dallas/Fort Worth community by conducting several free baseball clinics, volunteering at the Special Olympics of Texas State Track and Field Meet, Feast of Sharing, Operation Christmas Child, Habitat for Humanity, and the North Texas Food Bank.
