Facing the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 of the World Series, a double from Zobrist in the top of the 10th inning plated the go-ahead run, as
the Cubs held off the Indians 8-7 to capture their first
championship
in 108 years. Following the Cubs’
historic win, Zobrist was named the Most Valuable Player
of the 2016 World Series after leading Chicago with 10 hits and posting a .357 batting average.
For Zobrist, it marked his second consecutive World Series championship. In
2015, he helped the Kansas City Royals
clinch their first title in 30 years when they
defeated the New York Mets in five games.
Zobrist would play in every game in
the 2015
postseason for the Royals, hitting .303 with a pair of home runs and six RBIs.
As a Patriot, Zobrist spent his senior year at DBU in 2004 and hit a team-best .378 for a Patriots’ team that went 44-16. Zobrist also led the team in home runs (8), RBIs (66), slugging percentage (.590), and stolen bases (22).
Following the 2004 season, Zobrist was selected in the sixth round of the Major League Draft by the Houston Astros. Two years later, he was traded to the Tampa
Bay Rays and made his Major League debut in 2006. Zobrist spent nine seasons in Tampa Bay, playing in 1,064 games in a Rays’ uniform before signing with the Oakland Athletics in 2015. Later that same year, he was acquired by the Kansas City Royals before the trading deadline in their push to the postseason. Following the Royals’ World Series title in 2015, Zobrist signed a four- year deal as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs.
Zobrist completed his 14-year Major League career in 2019, giving him the longest Big League career by a player from DBU. The Patriot legend was a three-time All-Star and was named to the American and National League All-Star teams during his career.
